The Bombers Preferred Contact Pelham Bit has a mouthpiece with cylindrical sides and is flat through the middle section. The cylindrical sides are slightly ribbed, to flex onto the bars (the interdental area) at the bottom of the horse’s jaw. The flattened centre pad bends over the tongue, to soften tongue pressure. The tongue pad is an elongated circle, angled at 45 degrees to sit flush against the tongue and palate. The articulated ribs on either side of the tongue pad allow the cylindrical sides some independence, and the tongue pad some stability.
The preferred contact mouthpiece has been specifically designed for cases where Bombers’ tongue relief methods have not worked, and some form of tongue pressure must be considered. It helps spread bar and tongue pressure more evenly, and has been popular for horses in a range of disciplines.
The pelham has attachments for two reins, one near the mouthpiece and one at the end of the shank. Some riders may prefer to use rein connectors. The pelham shank exerts moderate pressure at the poll and leverage on the mouthpiece and curb.
